The basics
What is OnlineComrade?
A noticeboard for Kakamega. Businesses, jobs, vacant houses, events, offers, things for sale, and news about what is happening around town — all posted by people who actually live here.
It is not a shop. We do not sell anything ourselves and we do not handle anyone's money.
Does it cost anything?
No. Browsing is free, posting is free, listing your business is free, and getting verified is free.
The only paid thing is a premium business account, which raises how many products you can have listed at once from 15 to 50. Everything else stays free.
Do I need an account just to look?
No. Anyone can browse every page and contact sellers on WhatsApp without signing up.
You need an account to post, to message people through the site, to comment, and to follow anyone.
Do you take a commission on sales?
None. You deal directly with the other person and keep everything. We never see or touch the money.
Your account
I forgot my password
Go to Reset password, enter your username or email, and we email you a link. Open that link and you can set a new password straight away.
Reset links only work once and expire after a while. If yours has expired, just request another.
The reset email has not arrived
Check your spam or junk folder first — that is where it usually is.
If it is genuinely not there after a few minutes, the email address on your account may be wrong or mistyped. Contact us and we will sort it out.
Can I change my username?
No — usernames are permanent, because other people's links and messages point at them.
Your display name is different and you can change it any time under My Portal → My profile. That is the name shown on your posts.
How do I delete my account?
Message us through Contact us from the email address on the account and we will remove it along with your posts.
Posting
Why is my post not showing yet?
Almost always because it is still being reviewed. Open My Portal → My posts — if it says Awaiting review, it is in the queue, usually for a few hours.
If it says Live but you still cannot see it on the page, your browser may be showing you a saved copy. Press Ctrl+Shift+R (or Cmd+Shift+R) to force a fresh load.
Why do you review posts at all?
Because an unchecked marketplace attracts scammers fast, and one bad experience early does lasting damage to a young site.
Once you have posted a few genuine things we mark your account as trusted, and everything you post after that goes live immediately.
I chose the wrong tag or category
Open My Portal → My posts → Edit and change it. The post moves to the correct page by itself.
My photos will not upload
Photos must be images (JPG, PNG, GIF or WebP) and under 12MB. A normal phone photo is well within that.
If nothing happens when you tap, it is usually a weak connection — the upload is silently timing out. Try again on better signal.
Something I searched for is not appearing
Try a shorter word. Searching bedsit finds bedsitter, and common local words work — mtumba finds thrift listings, fundi finds repair and trade work.
Remember a search looks across every category, so if you get no matches it genuinely is not on the site yet.
My item sold. What now?
Use Mark sold rather than deleting. A Sold badge appears on the card, people can still see what you stock, and it frees nothing — so if you get another one, just mark it available again.
Businesses
What does the blue checkmark mean?
That we have confirmed the business is real — the shop exists and the contact reaches the owner.
It is not a rating. A verified business can still be one you would rather avoid, which is what the reviews are for. Verification is free and cannot be bought.
How do I get verified?
Fill in your business page completely — real contacts, a location, opening hours and what you sell. We check listings as they come in.
If you have been waiting a while, nudge us.
How many products can I list?
- Member — 5 products
- Registered business — 15 products, free
- Premium business — 50 products
Only products count. Jobs, houses, events, updates and offers are unlimited for everyone.
Someone left an unfair review
We do not remove reviews for being negative — a review section nobody trusts is worth nothing to you.
We do remove reviews that are abusive, from someone who never dealt with you, or posted by a competitor. Tell us with the details and we will look.
Often the better move is replying publicly and calmly. People reading it judge how you handled it.
Safety and trust
Is it safe to buy here?
As safe as the care you take. We check listings and remove what is reported, but we are not part of any deal and cannot inspect what people are selling.
Meet in public and in daylight, see the item before paying, and check the payment number against the seller's page.
Someone asked me to pay before I see the item
Do not. That is how nearly every scam here works.
Report the listing using the Report link at the bottom of it, and we will look into it. Reports are private — they are never told who reported them.
A job post is asking for a fee
No genuine employer charges you to apply, to interview, to register, or for a uniform.
Report it immediately. This scam targets young people looking for work and we remove these on sight.
I have already been scammed
Report it to the police — we cannot recover money or arrest anyone.
Then tell us with the listing link and what happened. We will remove the listing and close the account so it does not happen to the next person.
Does anyone see my phone number?
Only where you added it yourself — on a post or on your business page. It is never shown otherwise.
Your email is never shown to anyone. If you would rather not share a number at all, use the site's own messaging instead.
If something is not working
The site looks wrong or out of date
Your browser keeps a saved copy of pages. Press Ctrl+Shift+R on a computer, or Cmd+Shift+R on a Mac, to force a fresh one.
On a phone, closing the tab and reopening the page usually does it.
Is there an app?
Not yet. The site is built to work properly on a phone browser, and you can add it to your home screen — open the browser menu and choose Add to Home screen. It then opens like an app.
Do you cover places outside Kakamega?
Kakamega and the areas around it are the focus. Being genuinely local is the point — a national site full of listings six hours away is not much use when you want a house this month.
Still stuck?
Send us a message. If it is about a particular listing, include the link — it is much quicker to sort out.
